The One Big Beautiful Bill has made it through the Senate. To be honest, it certainly doesn't have everything we hoped for, and what President Trump requested, but there are reasons to celebrate: | - Planned Parenthood has been defunded for one year. That may not sound like much, but this is the first time that Congress has defunded Planned Parenthood in DECADES. It's worth remembering that several Planned Parenthood facilities have already closed this year citing this impending cut in federal funding.
- The Child Tax Credit has been increased permanently to $2,200. The House version of the bill called for a higher increase, but that increase would have lasted only through 2028. The Senate made it permanent.
- Families can also count on education tax credits. It's frustrating that specific protections for religious schools aren't in the bill – but it's still a big win for families in general. And the Supreme Court majority has been very vigilant in protecting religious freedom.
- President Trump's 2017 tax cuts have been made permanent. Could you imagine if tax rates went back up in January? These cuts have made a big difference and will, happily, continue to do so.
| It's important to understand that there are a lot of hurdles for any bill to clear on Capitol Hill. Unfortunately, in clearing those hurdles we weren't able to get everything we wanted. A lot of people, including our CatholicVote political team, fought hard to make improvements and to see this bill through. We will continue to fight for our agenda throughout this Congress. For now, it looks like the One Big Beautiful Bill should soon land on President Trump's desk, which means he can sign it and get to work on implementing his agenda.
