We've already expressed our concerns about President Trump's recent remarks calling for 'flexibility' on Hyde Amendment pro-life protections.
But we also want to make sure he knows about a great option at his disposal that can give him the tool he needs to move forward on health care.
President Trump should direct the Internal Revenue Service to clarify that abortions cannot constitute medical care under §213(d) of the Internal Revenue Code.
You might be wondering: Why is this even necessary?
In 1973, soon after the fateful Roe v. Wade was decided, bureaucrats at the Internal Revenue Service went to work and reinterpreted the long-standing statutory definition of "medical care" in our tax code to ensure it included abortions. There were no hearings in Congress. There was no vote. It was all done quietly in the IRS bureaucracy, which has no competency to make decisions for Americans about health care.
Changing that IRS definition has had massive repercussions. It was the wrong decision then. And it is wrong today. Even more so now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned.
The time has come to scrap this bureaucratic rule that provides tax breaks for abortions.
I'm asking all Catholics to go to the CatholicVote Action Center and send a message to President Trump that it's time to end tax breaks for abortion. The message is already written for you; all you have to do is sign it as if it were a petition.
This is just the kind of creative solution a dealmaker like Trump can get behind. And the best part: he doesn't need Congressional approval to get it done.
Let's do our part to get abortion out of health care. Send President Trump a message today.
Go forward bravely,
