Like you, I was thrilled this weekend by the news that Brian Burch is on his way to Rome at last.
This is a moment of profound joy for all of us here at CatholicVote.
For me, it was also a moment to reflect on the legacy he leaves behind for the time being… and I have been overwhelmed with gratitude for his legacy.
In 2005, three young, scrappy guys shared a "radical" idea that Catholics should have a seat at the table when it comes to politics. And not just on "church issues," but on every issue.
They believed that the Catholic moment was at hand.
Because of Brian's tenacity and leadership through the years, America is a better place today. Not just for Catholics. But for everyone.
Just one example: Less than three months after launching this bold new initiative, CatholicVote was thrust immediately into the fight over two new Supreme Court vacancies. At the time, Democrats in the Senate were threatening to use the Catholic faith of judicial nominees as grounds to oppose their confirmation – in direct violation of the Constitution.
Brian saw this danger… but also the potential that the vacancy offered to the pro-life movement and a return to Constitutional order. He took up this fight directly and made several key bold decisions, including a push that led to the nomination and confirmation of one of the most consequential Supreme Court justices in recent memory.
That nominee? Justice Samuel Alito… the man who 16 years later would write the opinion for Dobbs v. Jackson.
That's right. The case that overturned Roe and has saved tens of thousands of lives already.
Brian's mission now – to represent the American people to the Holy See – will demand an even greater measure of service, wit, diplomacy, and, yes, personal holiness of him. We are praying for him, for Sara, and for their children daily.
His departure, however, places the same demand on all of us who believe in the mission of CatholicVote. Brian built an organization that by God's grace was able to turn the Blue Wall into a Catholic moment.
His legacy is this Catholic moment. It's our mission to protect that moment.
I've seen the data. I've reviewed the results of what CatholicVote has done and what we are seeing, and I have never been more excited and hopeful for what's coming. But it won't happen on its own.
If you've been inspired by what Brian has championed, please consider joining the Champions Club – our monthly donors club members – today in his honor. Your contribution allows us to plan for the future and anticipate the next.
Let's send our champion off to Rome with a thousand new Champions!
Go forward bravely,
