Welcome to the Thursday edition of the Future Coach newsletter. This week, bat beauty contests and flying cars. First, I'll answer your question about whether premium egg labels matter.

You can always reach me at futurecoach@washpost.com. I read everything you send.

Sue asks: Do cage-free, organic or enhanced-setting eggs really make a difference to the climate, the chickens, or us?

Egg cartons these days are a package of promises: cage-free, pasture-raised, free-range and more. What does it all mean?

In recent decades, several new certifications and labels have appeared that claim to improve the life of chickens, and perhaps the quality and sustainability of the eggs. Let’s review.

Cage-free, under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s definition, means hens can move about an indoor area with access to food, water and natural activities such as places to scratch, perch and nest. They’re not exactly pastoral: Cage-free can still mean cramped and does not mean outdoor access. But it’s a big improvement from tiny battery cages that house 54 percent of laying hens, which animal rights groups call an “extreme form of suffering.” McDonald’s now says it only sources cage-free eggs in the United States.

Free-range goes one step further by giving hens access to the outdoors, according to USDA rules, although that’s not a guarantee of animal welfare. Pasture-raised labels mean the birds roam and forage outdoors for most of their lives, based on USDA rules, distinguishing it from free-range. Experts recommend using brands that include third-party animal welfare certifications.

Finally, there’s organic, a mix of production standards (organic feed, no antibiotics) and improved indoor and outdoor living conditions. If you see “enriched with Omega 3,” it typically means a diet with an omega-3 supplement, often flax seeds.

Which is better? One Penn State study noted that pasture-raised eggs contain twice the vitamin E and more than twice the omega-3 compared with caged hens, but USDA has said there is no definitive scientific data showing egg nutrition varies by hen housing.

For the chickens, pasture-raised appears to give them a better life. (We can’t know for sure because poultry don’t fill out surveys.) But it requires more labor to manage things like mobile coops and rotational grazing, so your box of eggs costs more.

The average price for conventional caged eggs was $1.31 per dozen in October, while cage-free eggs were $2.54 per dozen. Pasture-raised eggs typically run about $7 to $12.

If you’re concerned about chicken welfare, you might consider that half of the chicks raised in egg laying, more than 6 billion each year, are killed for being male, regardless of how the hens are raised. A new technology predicting the sex of embryos before an egg hatches is now widely available in Europe and entered the U.S. market in 2024.

From a climate perspective, eggs are among the lowest-carbon animal protein sources. Several studies, some industry-funded, find caged systems require less feed and land per egg than more humane methods, but the difference is dwarfed by the difference between protein sources. Eggs have roughly 5 to 8 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of food compared with beef.

The vaquita, the world’s rarest marine mammal, just lost most of its protected habitat in Mexico.

Only about seven to 10 of the diminutive porpoises remain in Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California, reports Inside Climate News, down from more than 550 in 1997.

This month, the Mexican government slashed the protected area by 86 percent. That leaves just 600 square miles where fishers can’t use gillnets, curtain-like fishing gear that can drown vaquitas and especially calves. Gillnets are often used to poach totoaba, an endangered fish whose swim bladder fetches up to $80,000 per kilogram on the Chinese black market.

The Mexican navy patrols the protected waters, along with conservation groups like the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. But the species will not rebound unless the existing members survive. “We’ve reached the point where every single vaquita matters,” said Heidy Martínez, a shark scientist who has spent years on vaquita-monitoring vessels in the region.

✏️ From Mike’s Notebook

I’ve seen the pattern before. Many people devoted to fixing global problems such as climate change conclude the only answer is scale: sweeping policy, transformative technology and global treaties. Others, confronting the same problem, conclude the opposite: Changing the hearts and minds of individuals, they argue, is the only thing that leads to durable, systematic change.

After years working on one or the other, many have later told me that they no longer believe one of the two paths is the answer. There are no silver bullets, only silver buckshot, where thousands of efforts and millions of people make unexpected progress on seemingly intractable problems. Making progress on our world-scale problems requires a messy top-down and bottom-up process.

Which bring me back to my Tuesday column on Robin Greenfield’s attempt to forage all of his food for a year. Foraging will not solve our food system’s problems. As an individual act, he freely admits, it is futile. But Greenfield argues it can start a conversation that makes real change possible. “Food is the gateway, he writes. “It was for me. It has been for millions of others.”

💡 Reader Tips and Stories

You had opinions about Greenfield’s project. Many of you objected to the idea that we could all forage our own food. That’s true, but not exactly what Greenfield is proposing.

“Dude is simply preaching awareness through his example,” wrote one animated reader. “Look around you. Touch a mushroom. Smell a twig. Nibble a dandelion. Ground yourself. Do these things, pay attention; sometimes, you score. All this week, my husband and I have been enjoying foraged Maitake stir-fries, mushroom ramen, and Lion’s Mane ‘crab cakes’ because I pay attention to what’s growing around trees on our dog walks. It’s a total gas, it’s free, it’s DELICIOUS — and it all makes me feel connected. And guess what? After I type this I’ll go have the coffee I ordered off Amazon. One does not exclude the other.”

I feel like that covers it.

Aaron Lewis recounted his own life: “I grew up in a family that got most of its food from the garden. We also kept chickens, so there were eggs and I had an egg route and sold eggs and firewood. My parents had advanced degrees and were well paid. We had a garden because we liked fresh organic food. The dinner table would seat 12, and it was often full of university professors and their students.”

Others wrote with recommendations such as the 1962 classic “Stalking the Wild Asparagus” by Ewell Gibbons. One reader just appreciated a different perspective. “While definitely not a choice I would make, I had no idea there were people living this way, and so contentedly.”
