Friend,
Last week’s unforced error by the Washington Nationals with regard to pitcher Trevor Williams was a stunning example of anti-Catholic bigotry. A community relations executive for the team revealed, on hidden camera, that the Nats organization doesn’t use Williams in social media marketing due to his strong views as a Catholic.
Williams’ most disconcerting views, according to the video, were expressed online while defending the Church against the blasphemous, virulently anti-Catholic, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence drag troupe. He also criticized the Los Angeles Dodgers for celebrating them as pillars of the greater Los Angeles community.
<<Fight against the mocking of our Catholic faith.>>
CatholicVote acted immediately, demanding answers from Nationals’ ownership and calling on the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division to investigate whether the Washington Nationals unlawfully discriminated against Williams because of his Catholic faith.
Within 24 hours, the Nationals distanced themselves from the statements. Within 48 hours, the executive at the center of the case was dismissed and the nationals issued an apology for the entire sordid mess.
To put it plainly: We saw. We acted. We won. Decisively.
Firing that executive was the right move. But that he felt comfortable saying such things is a reminder that we must always be vigilant in defending our faith in the public square.
<<Help us root out anti-Catholic bigotry.>>
CatholicVote intends to monitor the team’s treatment of Williams, as well as the treatment of Catholics throughout the world of professional sports. No Catholic employee should be professionally sidelined for objecting to public acts that mock Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Eucharist, the priesthood, or religious life.
That goes for everyone, not just celebrity athletes.
Wherever anti-Catholic bigotry rears its head, CatholicVote intends to be there with a swift response. Protecting the rights of Catholics in the public sphere is essential to our mission.
This is why CatholicVote exists. We equip Catholics to speak clearly in public life. And when necessary, we take the fight directly to the people in power.
But we can’t do it without you.
<<Will you make an urgent gift today?>>
Help us fight back against anti-Catholic discrimination and hostility.
The message from the elites is simple: Keep your faith private, stay quiet, and don’t challenge the new orthodoxy.
Our answer must be just as simple: We will always stand up for our faith.
Go forward bravely,
