I won’t attempt to describe the feeling of walking onto that stage, except to say that the energy coming from the crowd was palpable—as was the warmth in their reception.
I’m sure each person who stepped onto that stage felt the same thing.
After my opening remarks, Cardinal Burke returned to the podium for a stirring, insightful presentation on the natural complementarity of faith and patriotism, and how patriotism—rightly ordered—gives glory to God and furthers His kingdom on earth.
The difficult duty of following that eminent prince of the Church fell to Isabel Brown of The Daily Wire. Proving why she is known as a voice for Gen Z Catholics, Isabel strongly addressed the essential importance of young people reviving both faith and patriotism in their lives. We can safely say the future of the Catholic laity is in good hands with people like Isabel.
Next to the stage was our own Josh Mercer (co-founder of CatholicVote) for an informative and entertaining conversation with Joe Lombardi, Senior Offensive Assistant Coach for the Baltimore Ravens and grandson of the legendary Vince Lombardi. Using his late grandfather's motto of ‘faith, family, then football’ as a launch point, Joe explained how he strives to live that way himself.
Coach Lombardi was followed by Cecilia Jean—lifestyle podcaster, blogger, and host of Flourish on our Zeale digital platform. In a conversation with CatholicVote's Erika Ahern, Cecilia spoke beautifully about true freedom, the role of patriotism in the family, and serving the common good. She also spoke of the inspiring opportunity the Flourish program gives her to meet people who are living for others.
At this point, attendees were riding high on the echoes of faithful living and heartfelt patriotism in the air. And they celebrated it en masse as I introduced our keynote speaker, the renowned Michael Knowles. Met by a standing ovation, Michael proceeded to apply his signature insight, wit and sense of humor to a wide-ranging exploration of Catholic influence on history, in particular, American history.
After Michael left the stage, Cardinal Burke returned for an incredible moment, as he blessed those present with a relic of the True Cross.
Then, in another example of having a hard act to follow, Bradley Banning returned to the stage after the blessing to lead us in singing “God Bless America.” I doubt there was a dry eye in the audience.
