A landmark case for the defense of crisis pregnancy centers is before the Supreme Court right now, and CatholicVote wants to encourage everyone to pray for a just resolution.
First Choice Women's Resource Centers is an organization offering vital support to pregnant women who wish to avoid abortion. Their centers are among 3,000 pregnancy centers nationwide that help women turn an anxious unplanned pregnancy into a path toward a precious life event.
Their reward for serving women of the Garden State?
New Jersey's attorney general, Matthew Platkin, has issued a subpoena demanding that First Choice surrender a decade's worth of private information, including donor names, addresses, phone numbers, and places of employment. The goal is for Platkin's office to question the people found in that data.
The state calls this sweeping subpoena a routine part of an investigation into First Choice. Typically, such subpoenas follow allegations of misconduct.
But, as Justice Clarence Thomas discovered in his questioning last week, First Choice has never had a complaint lodged against them. Not a single one.
This subpoena, issued by the attorney general "on pain of contempt" for noncompliance demands 10 years of private records from an organization that receives no government funding. The aim is undeniable–it's a fishing expedition by those who would see pregnancy centers shuttered. Penalties for contempt range as high as dissolution for the organization.
This type of legalistic bullying isn't confined to New Jersey. Attorneys general and legislators in California, New York, Washington and Vermont have been waging similar efforts. In 2022, The Sisters of Life ultimately won their case against government intrusion after New York passed a law requiring sensitive internal data similar to the New Jersey subpoena.
Make no mistake, there is an ongoing coordinated campaign to bully, intimidate, and effectively "dox" pro-life donors and ruin crisis pregnancy centers financially. Why? Because the abortion lobby is losing ground.
CatholicVote stands with First Choice and all those courageously serving mothers and protecting unborn babies. We pray that the Supreme Court will rule in their favor, dismissing New Jersey's reckless subpoena, and set a nationwide precedent that will safeguard vulnerable women and babies everywhere.
Go forward bravely,
