Polio rates were cut drastically after the introduction of a vaccine in 1955, with the last naturally occurring cases in the United States in 1979. Travelers with polio have brought infections into the United States on rare occasions, however, with the last such case in 2013. New York officials urged health providers to be on the lookout for additional cases since polio is very contagious to the unvaccinated. |
