It's clear that the Biden administration isn't really interested in fundamentally altering its relationship with the unaccountable Saudi and Egyptian governments.
President Biden has showed his ability to work across the aisle with his bipartisan infrastructure agreement. But the real test is whether he can bring Democrats together to address these challenges.
For media freedom to flourish in Asia again, regional powers with democratic traditions, such as India and the Philippines, will have to to return to the values their leaders have abandoned.
