Environment Alert: Trump’s revised auto-mileage rule could cost consumers without making U.S. roads much safer, documents filed with White House show

The rule would weaken Obama-era standards that boosted the average fuel efficiency of the U.S. auto fleet by nearly 5 percent a year. The Trump administration proposal would raise it 1.5 percent annually between model years 2021-2026. The proposed rollback would save just a fraction of the lives that officials originally projected it would, according to two individuals familiar with the matter, and Americans would pay more in fuel costs over the lifetime of their vehicles than they'd save on the initial sticker price.
