President Trump’s first 100 days so far: 4 false/misleading claims per day, 6 of 60 promises kept

This week, we launched a new Fact Checker project: 100 days of Trump claims. Every day for the first 100 days of the new presidency, we will keep track of false or misleading claims made by the new president.

Trump is a unique politician in terms of the volume and frequency of false or misleading claims he makes. Moreover, he often repeats the same debunked claims even though they have been fact-checked. So far, Trump has said something misleading or false every day of his presidency.

It’s hard to keep up with all of his rhetoric, so we’re assembling in one place all of his suspect statements from his first 100 days. You can sort them by various categories and see how many times he has repeated the same false statement. (For those wondering: We didn’t have a similar project for former President Barack Obama. Fact Checker launched in 2007 during the presidential campaign, and went dormant for the first two years of Obama’s first term.)

So far, the most frequent topic of his false/misleading claims is immigration (25 times), his biographical record (20 times) and jobs (17 times). Within the topic of immigration, the travel ban was a frequent subject of Trump's claims during the administration's first two weeks. The greatest number of these claims came from Twitter (34 times) and remarks he made during an event or meeting (31 times).

Follow along, and send us suggestions if you see any claims missing in the database. Fill out this form to send us a tip.

Trump Promise Tracker update: Trump is falling behind on his '100-day' promise list

Also at The Fact Checker, we've been tracking the progress of each pledge on our Trump Promise Tracker. Despite the drama of Trump's first month in office, he has actually made little or no progress on many of his promises. With Trump having passed the one-third mark of his 100 days, we took stock of his 60 promises this week.

Only six promises are listed as "kept," while 45 have seen no action. We also list seven as "launched," one as "stuck" and one as "broken."

Perhaps this should not be a surprise. Trump, in his contract, set extremely ambitious goals for himself. Most of the promises that have been kept were easy to carry out, with action shortly after Trump took the oath of office. For example, he announced the United States was withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal — a symbolic gesture, since the deal was already dead in Congress.

We update the list as new developments occur — and a promise “kept” may eventually move to “stalled.” For example, by signing the controversial immigration executive order, Trump kept his promise to “suspend immigration fro terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur.” But the order was blocked in the federal court system, and the administration now says it is drafting a new order.

His one broken promise so far is his pledge to impose a five-year ban on White House and congressional officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government service. The executive order he signed on executive-branch officials made no reference to congressional officials, and it did not prohibit officials from becoming lobbyists.

There are dozens of other 100-day promises on which Trump has taken no action. We’ll keep watching, so follow along.
