The new Environmental Protection Agency rule aims to cut the use and production of greenhouse gases known as hydrofluorocarbons by 85 percent over the next 15 years. This class of chemicals, widely used in refrigeration and air conditioning, are short-lived but hundreds to thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide. The move implements a bipartisan law passed late last year, which has the support of many chemical manufacturers and environmental groups. |
