Daniel Bernoulli, round squares and valve experts at the IFAT

Daniel Bernoulli and the lifting force
In the 18th century, physicist Daniel Bernoulli described the effect of aerodynamic lift: “Gases flowing past the surface of a body exert a lower pressure than still gases.” Sounds trivial? But it’s revolutionary! The best-known practical application of this effect is the aircraft wing. Due to the wing’s curved surface, the distance of the air flowing past its top is longer than that at its bottom (see picture). For this reason, the speed of the air flowing above the wing is higher. Lift is generated because the pressure above the wing is lower than that below it.
The disk of the VAG SKR Slanted-Seat Tilting-Disk Check Valve makes use of this effect. Due to its curved geometry, it opens completely even at low flow velocities and rests particularly steadily in the flow. This protects the valve shaft and bearing from damage and also reduces energy costs in pump operation. Our animation illustrates this effect.

The Quadring or squaring the circle
Did you know that the first annular slide valve, the predecessor of today’s plunger valve, was made at our Mannheim plant as early as 1932?

Quality is often a question of experience and numerous small details:

Here we are describing just one essential feature of the VAG RIKO® Plunger Valve: On its inside, a four-side sealing Quadring is used as a double seal between the body and the movable plunger. What’s the advantage compared to the conventional O-ring that is used by many other manufacturers? As the plunger performs a longitudinal motion to open and close the valve, there is a risk of the seal being twisted if a conventional O-ring is used. The Quadring, however, never twists and ensures reliable tightness even at high-load cycles.
