Lawmakers face a Friday deadline to keep federal agencies funded through the year. Yet President Trump is also pushing for revisions on health care and the tax code, giving the appearance of a frenzied search for wins ahead of Saturday's symbolically important 100th day of the new presidency.
Afghan army base is site of deadliest single attack by Taliban insurgents since 2001
Reports differed about the number of fatalities on the major base, but officials said Taliban fighters killed at least 140 people and injured 60 others. Witnesses said assailants attacked mostly unarmed soldiers and officers leaving the base's mosque or eating at its canteen.

March for Science brings out demonstrators on six continents: 'There is no Planet B'
Thousands gathered on the grounds of the Washington Monument: "The very idea of evidence and logic and reason is being threatened by individuals and interests with the power to do real harm," one of the rally emcees said. Some in the crowd directed their commentary to the occupant of the nearby White House, bringing a political tone to an event that organizers said was not meant to be partisan.
