The mystery of the Messner Foundation In his past life, Corky Messner built a law firm in Denver and was the general counsel for Chipotle Mexican Grill, amassing a fortune. In his current life, Messner is running for the Republican nomination for Senate in New Hampshire, endorsed by President Trump. But the Messner Foundation, a charity founded by Messner ostensibly to give scholarships to low-income students, seems to have taken a life of its own. "You know, it's mostly my personal money," the candidate told a group of Republicans in May. "You know, we do some things in the law firm around the country to raise money for the foundation. But ultimately we don't raise that much so it's essentially my money that goes into it to help these kids." He said the foundation had been started "maybe 10 years ago." Tax records show that during its first 10 years, the foundation made grants to only one student. Its first disbursement, in 2014, was a $50,000 contribution to the Colorado Academy, one of the state's elite private schools, for "construction of athletic facilities." It didn't go well. He had plagiarized speeches, and reports were emerging that Biden had flunked a class in law school because a paper he submitted lifted passages from another writer without proper attribution. Frank Fahey, a teacher from New Hampshire, had challenged Biden's biographical claims at a forum in April 1987. The moment has been captured for all eternity on C-SPAN, and readers in Wisconsin have been asking us whether Biden's defensive and touchy response ("I would be delighted to sit down and compare my IQ to yours, Frank") from more than 30 years ago is real. A pro-GOP group known as Restoration PAC is running footage from the three-decade-old event in Wisconsin media markets and has said it plans to spend about $2 million on the ad buy. The remarks are genuine. The ad, for understandable reasons, does not include the fact that the man Biden insulted is now a supporter. Some voters may find that relevant. "I went to law school on a full academic scholarship — the only one in my class to have full academic scholarship." As Newsweek later revealed, it was a half-scholarship based on financial need. "The first year in law school, I decided I didn't want to be in law school and ended up in the bottom two-thirds of my class.
