DeVos says 'kids are actually stoppers of the disease' Could children actually be "stoppers" of covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus? Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who is pressing the Trump administration's case for sending kids back to school in the fall, made the claim during a radio interview: "More and more studies show that kids are actually stoppers of the disease and they don't get it and transmit it themselves." The Education Department sent us four sources in support of DeVos's claim, emphasizing a German study that found no evidence that schoolchildren play a role in spreading the virus, with a researcher quoted in a news report as saying that "children may even act as a brake on infection." Well, there's a problem with that. The German study has not been peer-reviewed; it is still in preprint review by the Lancet, meaning it should not be used to guide clinical practice. The German researchers told The Fact Checker that the results do not apply to a country such as the United States, where infections have been soaring. Germany, by contrast, is among the countries that are considered to have handled the outbreak with skill and diligence, keeping infections per million people relatively low. It's easy to find studies and news reports that contradict DeVos's assertion. In South Korea, a large study using contact tracing found that children ages 10 to 19 can spread the virus at least as much as adults do; children younger than 10 were half as likely to transmit the virus, but there was still a risk. In Israel, at least 1,335 students and 691 staff members contracted the coronavirus after the country reopened its entire school system without restrictions on May 17, believing it had beaten the virus. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Trump repeated all three gripes during an interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News on Sunday, and the same three have popped up in various interviews since April. 1. "Dr. Fauci at the beginning said, 'This will pass.'" Fauci never said anything like "this will pass." He spoke as a scientist, evaluating the data in front of him. From the start, Fauci warned of the need to be vigilant. For example, here's the doctor on CNN in January: "It really is an evolving situation, and we have to be prepared for the worst. I mean, I don't think there is cause for panic on anyone's part, but we certainly need to be following it and watching this very carefully." 2. "Dr. Fauci told me not to ban China." We're not sure exactly what Fauci might have said to Trump, but he did initially express public skepticism about the effectiveness of travel restrictions. "That would create a lot of disruption economically and otherwise and it wouldn't necessarily have a positive effect," Fauci said in a report published Jan. 24. But by the time of the announcement, Fauci was a supporter of the idea. "These were the uniform recommendations of the career public health officials here at HHS," Health Secretary Alex Azar said shortly after the announcement. (The National Institutes of Health is part of the Department of Health and Human Services.) 3. "Dr. Fauci said, 'Don't wear a mask.'" Fauci did say this, as did other health experts in the U.S. government. He says he was motivated by early fears that N95 masks needed by hospital workers would quickly run out of stock. Once science indicated that the virus was spread by people who were asymptomatic, the guidance was updated, because even fabric masks can help halt the spread if everyone wears them.
