Being a Yiddish Writer in the USSR After the Holocaust

The Yiddish Forward is proud to co-sponsor Ber Kotlerman — author of the award-winning Forverts article on the topic — as he presents, "Being A Yiddish Writer in the USSR After the Holocaust: The Fate of Der Nister". 

 

Kotlerman, professor of Jewish literature at Bar-Ilan University, co-authored the award-winning Forverts story on Der Nister in September 2017. He'll speak about Der Nister, the pen name of Pinkhes Kahanovich, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. The event will be held in Yiddish.

Shabbat Dinner and Film Screening

Join Forward opinion editor Batya Ungar-Sargon at the Film Fest: 20s + 30s Shabbat Dinner on November 2 at the Marlene Meyerson JCC in Manhattan.


Hosted by Other Israel Film Festival, New Israel Fund's New Generations, OneTable and other young leadership groups, the event, which will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., will feature Kosher dinner, drinks and a short film screening, followed by a conversation with the filmmakers about Israel today. Batya will help lead the evening.

'Looking for Zion'

The Other Israel Film Festival continues with a look back at Zionism in the 1930s.

 

Join Forward editor-at-large J.J. Goldberg for the U.S. premiere of "Looking For Zion," a documentary directed by Tamara Erde. Inspired by photographs taken by her Zionist grandfather, she finds herself on a journey, discovering the decisions and reasons behind his images.

 

Goldberg will moderate a Q&A with Erde following the screening. This event will take place at the Marlene Meyerson JCC in Manhattan.

'In Her Footsteps'

A new film discovers the true meaning of belonging.

 

Forward executive editor Dan Friedman will moderate a Q&A following the screening of "In Her Footsteps," the story of director Rana Abu Fraiha's family's journey, from their Bedouin village to Omer, a nearby Jewish town. They lived in Omer for 20 years, yet they ran into unexpected problems when Fraiha's mother, a Muslim, expressed her desire to be buried in its Jewish cemetery.


The New York City premiere will be screened at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan.

Unpacking the Midterms as Jews in Trump's America

Forward editor-in-chief Jane Eisner will help unpack the midterm elections when she joins the JCC of Greater Boston's Jonathan Samen Hot Buttons Cool Conversations series. She'll analyze the election outcome and delve into the current political landscape — including being a Jew in Trump's America.


Jonathan Weisman, deputy Washington editor of The New York Times and author of "(((Semitism))): Being Jewish in America in the Age of Trump," will join Jane as they discuss polarizing issues that candidates have faced.

"Across the Divide" – Getting Candid About Israel

It's time to speak candidly — and listen openly — about Israel.

 

Join Forward opinion editor Batya Ungar-Sargon in Part 1 of "Across the Divide," a series designed to discuss Israel from a political, denominational and generational view. On the panel at the Streicker Center in Manhattan, she'll weigh in on the past, present and future of Israel engagement.


Batya will be joined by two other other young, influential voices: Yair Rosenberg, senior writer at Tablet Magazine, and Bari Weiss, op-ed writer and editor at The New York Times.

Jews in the Modern World

Explore the big questions of modern Jewish life and their impact on Judaism with Forward editor-in-chief Jane Eisner, as she moderates a panel with two of the American Jewish community's most prominent leaders and thinkers.


The panel will take place at B'nai Jeshurun in Manhattan. There will be an exclusive reception prior to the event at 6:30 p.m., which includes refreshments.

From Jean Carroll to Mrs. Maisel

The inspiration for Miriam "Midge" Maisel in the hit series, 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' came from a host of real-life groundbreaking comedians, including Jean Carroll.

 

Come laugh along with Noah Gardenswartz, a writer for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and Grace Overbeke, a literary adviser and doctoral candidate at Northwestern University, as they share film clips and discuss Carroll's life and work. The event will take place at the American Jewish Historical Society in Manhattan.
