The president-elect has chosen former senior military officer James Mattis, who led operations across the Middle East, to run the Pentagon less than four years after he hung up his uniform, according to people familiar with the decision.
The trick to persuading Trump? Flattery, proximity and snappy pitches.
Since winning the election, Trump has made clear that even his firmest positions are open to change, often echoing the last person he spoke to — or what he last saw on TV.
