No – or at least not the way you know it. It is true that there are sound systems that promise a feast for the ears under water. But the sounds can hardly be located; they seem to be coming from everywhere. Why is that so? In water, sound waves propagate almost 4.5 times faster than in air. Our brain detects the direction a noise comes from through the small difference in the time it takes for the sounds to enter our ears. Due to the fast propagation of the sound waves in water, this time difference is so minimal that we are no longer able to discern it. Where‘s the leak? Water distribution networks are exposed to permanent strain such as frost, earth movements and water pressure over many decades. The consequences are cracks, leaks – and thus water losses. According to experts’ estimates, around one third of the available drinking water is lost while it is transported to the end user.
