The slings and misfires of the second GOP debate

The Fact Checker newsletter will be on vacation starting next week. We'll be back in your inbox Friday, Oct. 20.

Fox News aired the second GOP debate of the 2024 election cycle from the Ronald Reagan presidential library in California on Wednesday night, featuring seven candidates. Not every candidate uttered facts that are easily checked, but we came up with a list of 15 claims that caught our attention, including:

  • "We brought 12,000 factories back to America during our administration." (Former vice president Mike Pence)
  • "Donald Trump failed on this as well. He said he was going to build a wall across the whole border. He built 52 miles of wall." (Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie)
  • "We [Florida] have a 50-year low in the crime rate." (Gov. Ron DeSantis)
  • "We're going to make the Europeans do what they need to do" on Ukraine (DeSantis)
  • "I'm incredibly proud of that tax cuts and tax reform bill…the largest tax cut in American history." (Pence)

We also produced a TikTok video assessing five claims made in the debate. You can read our full report by clicking this link.

The Haley-DeSantis and Scott-Haley rumbles

During the debate, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley was part of two sharp exchanges with her fellow candidates. She initiated an attack on DeSantis and then found herself under assault from her fellow South Carolinian, Sen. Tim Scott. We assessed both claims in our fact check.

Regarding DeSantis, Haley claimed he was against fracking and against drilling. As for Scott, he asserted she had ordered $50,000 in curtains for her residence when she was U.N. ambassador. DeSantis fiercely rejected her claim while Haley shot back at Scott that he had "bad information."

We found neither attack was fully justified. Click the link below to read our full report.

Environment Alert: Biden to approve new offshore oil leases, a move criticized by environmentalists despite its aims to help wind energy development

The Biden administration said Friday it will approve just three offshore oil and gas lease sales through 2029 — the smallest offshore oil drilling plan in history and one designed to narrowly comply with limits set by Congress. Lawmakers last year tied the fate of offshore wind development — a Biden priority — to approval of new oil leases. Even so, environmentalists criticized Biden's move, saying it violated one of his campaign pledges.
