Trump to pull U.S. from historic Paris climate agreement
President Trump will make good on a campaign promise to "cancel" the Paris climate agreement, officials say, breaking away from a global effort to reduce greenhouse gases. "The Paris Accord is a BAD deal for Americans," read a White House memo to supporters explaining the president's decision. The accord has divided the administration, and abandoning it could raise doubts about the commitment of the world's largest economy to curbing global warming.
As the U.S. bows out, some see shifts in global leadership
China in particular is expected to fill any leadership vacuum created by the U.S. retreat, both in climate change and trade.
 
As U.S. backs away from climate pledges, India and China step up
But the world's two other biggest polluters — whose vast populations stand to lose dramatically from global warming — will not be able to replace the financial incentives the United States had on the table.
 
Analysis
All but two countries are in the Paris climate agreement. The U.S. will be the third.
The United States will join two other nations — Syria and Nicaragua — in the U.N. climate group that do not participate in the accord.
