Science Alert: This Serengeti massacre powers the circle of life

Along the Mara River in Kenya, Yale researchers find that the deaths every year of thousands of migrating wildebeests – either from the attacks of crocodiles or drowning – actually benefit an entire ecosystem of plants, microorganisms and other animals.

"The river comes alive. Fish start leaping. Predators start moving toward the bank," one researcher says.

The new study could change how the sciences view the contributions of big herds, alive and dead, to their landscapes.
