Trump's deregulatory agenda can't yet be blamed for Ohio train derailment In the aftermath of the Feb. 3 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, Biden administration officials strongly suggested that the Trump administration buckled under pressure from rail industry lobbyists, laying the groundwork for an accident. Former President Donald Trump denied that any regulatory changes on his watch were at fault. We decided to examine every regulatory change made under Trump that could be related in any possible way to the accident and assess whether it could have made an impact. A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident, said the Norfolk Southern crew received an alert about an overheated wheel bearing and was trying to slow the train before it came off the tracks. We ended up with six regulations to examine and assessed each on its possible relevance to the derailment. So far, the answers range from none to minimal.
