News Alert: Nearly half of U.S. adults will have high blood pressure under new guidelines

In a change affecting millions, the American Heart Association and other major heart groups are tightening the guidelines for hypertension. The threshold drops the top reading for high blood pressure from at least 140 or a bottom reading of 90 to a reading of 130 over 80. But doctors say only 2 percent of the expanded group of Americans will need medication. Most will be urged to adjust their lifestyles, eat healthier foods and be more physically active.
