Fact-checking Donald Trump's claims about the hush money case During this holiday week, one story dominated the headlines: the arraignment on Tuesday of former president Donald Trump on criminal charges related to his role in hush money payments to an adult-film star and a Playboy model. Both before and after the widely covered event, Trump made remarks on his social media website, Truth Social, and he delivered a speech at his home in Florida that evening. The incendiary claim that George Soros 'funded' Alvin Bragg From the moment it appeared that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would indict Trump, the former president has suggested that Bragg is operating at the direction of liberal billionaire George Soros — who he claimed had given more than $1 million to Bragg. The theme has been picked up by other Republicans. But the intense focus on Soros is misplaced. Soros never directly funded Bragg, but instead contributed to a group that supported Bragg and other liberal candidates seeking to be prosecutors. The group spent $420,000 on behalf of Bragg, not $1 million. Moreover, the repeated mention of Soros plays into antisemitic conspiracy theories that Soros, a Hungarian American Holocaust survivor, is a wealthy puppet-master who works behind the scenes to manipulate elections and further his goals. The Anti-Defamation League found in 2018 that Soros figures in a significant number of antisemitic tweets. We awarded Republicans Three Pinocchios. We're always looking for fact-check suggestions.
