Environment Alert: Extreme weather cost the nation 247 lives, nearly $100 billion in damage in 2018 as billion-dollar disasters become more frequent

The total damage is less than the record year in 2017, when Hurricanes Maria, Harvey and Irma devastated parts of the United States. But the 14 separate billion-dollar disasters that struck last year are part of a trend of more frequent extreme weather, which some experts suspect is fueled in part by the warming climate.
