The Mars Opportunity rover experienced a system failure precipitated by power loss during a catastrophic, planetwide dust storm that engulfed the robot last summer. Opportunity landed on Mars in 2004 and was planned to last just 90 days, but it worked for 5,000 Martian "sols" (which are about 39 minutes longer than an Earth day) — longer than any other rover. The rover is survived at Mars by the InSight lander, the Curiosity rover and six orbiting spacecraft. |
