The Food and Drug Administration, moving to stop the increasing use of e-cigarettes by youth, is cracking down on e-cigarette sales through a "large-scale, undercover nationwide blitz" at regular and online retailers, Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced Tuesday. The action specifically targets Juul brand products, which closely resemble a USB flash drive but have high levels of nicotine and emissions that are nearly invisible, Gottlieb said. They and similar e-cigarettes have become "wildly popular with kids." The crackdown has uncovered 40 violations for illegal sales of Juul products to youth since early March. The FDA has asked JUUL Labs to provide documents related to product marketing, research on the health, behavioral and other effects of its products, including use by minors, and design features that may appeal particularly to youth. |
