The slings and misfires of the fifth GOP debate CNN aired the fifth GOP debate of the 2024 election cycle from Des Moines on Wednesday night — a slugfest between Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. We came up with a list of 18 claims that caught our attention, including: - "When she was governor of South Carolina, she was rated 50th in education, dead last. You know where Florida is under my watch? Number one in the nation." (DeSantis)
- "Instead of 87,000 IRS agents going after middle America, we'll go after the hundreds of billions of dollars of covid fraud, 1 out of every $7." (Haley)
- "Nikki Haley, when she was governor, she promised she would never do the gas tax. Then she tried to raise the gas tax on hard-working South Carolinians."(DeSantis)
- "He spent more money on private planes than he has on commercials trying to get Iowans to vote for him." (Haley)

House GOP lawmakers keep hyping the numbers As House Republicans pursue an impeachment inquiry against President Biden, they routinely cite inaccurate and misleading figures about how much the "Biden family" — let alone the president — received from foreign sources. Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chair of the House Oversight Committee, often says the Biden family received "tens of millions of dollars from our enemies around the world." We looked into this in August, at a time when the committee previously had not detailed how much money flowed to Bidens as opposed to associates of Hunter Biden, the president's son, and decided it was time for an update. The House Oversight committee has released additional reports since our article and this time engaged in an extensive exchange with The Fact Checker about the numbers. The committee staff claims that of $24 million in payments between 2014 and 2019, $15 million went to members of the Biden family — primarily Hunter— and $9 million went to associates. Our article examines whether that stands up to scrutiny. Depending on how some transactions are counted, the figure could shrink to $11.2 million. Thus far, none of the money appears to have gone to Joe Biden. Click the link below to read the complete article. We're always looking for fact-check suggestions.
