Lauren Boebert's bogus migrant claim had a tangled tale A reader contacted us the other day asking whether a tweet by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) was accurate: "Biden is giving each illegal family $2,200 per month plus a free plane ticket and free medical care. If you come to this country illegally, you get everything handed to you on a silver platter. If you're a struggling American citizen, you get nothing. You actually just subsidize this foolishness." We quickly determined that this was a Four-Pinocchio claim. But we were more interested in how Boebert came to believe this falsehood. That took us on a long and winding path through conservative social media, including a Tucker Carlson interview. As we kept digging, we were surprised to learn that this bogus comparison started 17 years ago in Canada before it seeped into the United States and eventually into the talking points of a member of Congress. How not to fix Social Security, by a GOP group and Biden With some glee, President Biden last week held up a copy of what he called a budget crafted by "MAGA Republicans" and proceeded to bash it as out of touch with ordinary Americans — in particular its approach to Social Security. Social Security provides an interesting case study of the nation's current political dysfunction. Since 1995, the trustees of the old-age retirement program have warned, year after year, that a financing crunch would occur early in the 2030s, resulting in an immediate cut in benefits, unless Congress took action to address the problem. So the warnings began nearly three decades ago. There's less than ten years to go. One would think that would generate action in Washington to deal with the problem — but Biden as president has offered no solution and Republicans, even when supposedly offering a fix, have ducked the issue as well.
