President Biden moved to block oil drilling across giant swaths of Arctic Alaska, proposing stronger protections for public lands and canceling leases in what could be the federal government's most sweeping conservation action in 20 years. The White House, in the bigger of two major moves, proposes a permanent ban on oil and gas development for 10.6 million acres of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, the nation's largest expanse of public land. The White House promised such a move earlier this year to dampen concern over its approval of the Willow oil drilling project. |
