Science Alert: NASA’s Orion spacecraft reaches the moon, marking a major step in the agency’s plans to return astronauts to the surface

The spacecraft flew within 81 miles of the surface of the moon five days after it was launched from the Kennedy Space Center. It is the first time in 50 years that a craft designed to carry human beings had reached the vicinity of the moon.
