Health Alert: ACA enrollment for 2018 drew record surge of first-time customers as federal deadline neared

The Trump administration belatedly reported Thursday that 1 million new ACA consumers signed up for coverage in the final week before the Dec. 15 deadline in the federal marketplace. A total of nearly 9 million consumers chose insurance plans through HealthCare.gov -- nearly as many as last year, when the sign-up season was twice as long. The robust turnout defied expectations, given administration efforts to limit outreach and advertising and slash funding for enrollment assistance. States that run their own insurance exchange have yet to report their numbers, which seem likely to add another million or more to the final count.
