They look ordinary: gray with a hint of green, the sort of rock you may step over without thinking twice. But a pair of scientists say they just figured out a way of transforming these plain slabs of Earth into something extraordinary: a high-tech, low-cost substance that can bend geologic time and help stall — or even reverse — planetary warming. By harnessing some of the same technologies used today to produce cement, scientists said, they have found a way of heating a mixture of common minerals and turning them into a material that can suck carbon out of the sky and deposit it deep in Earth's oceans. |
