Pro-Trump group resurrects misleading claims about Obamacare The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, was enacted nearly 15 years ago and has survived numerous attempts by Republicans to repeal or substantially dismantle it. But Republicans haven't given up. Former president Donald Trump, the presumptive 2024 GOP nominee, has promised to overhaul the law, saying on social media that "the cost of Obamacare is out of control, plus, it's not good healthcare." Now a Trump-aligned think tank, the America First Policy Institute, has issued a video that it is promoting heavily on social media. The video features former Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal (R) making a sustained attack on Obamacare, without providing many details about how it would be replaced. "Obamacare was sold on a lie. It massively increased the cost of health care in America," Jindal says. In our fact check, we focused on two specific claims Jindal made about health-care costs — that because of Obamacare "premiums have increased 80 percent" and "total health care cost for a family of four has increased by $12,000 a year." These are repurposed talking points from previous GOP attacks on the law — which are highly misleading. To read our full report and find out Jindal's Pinocchio rating, please click the link. Biden's false claim that inflation was 9 percent when he took office Inflation continues to be an albatross for President Biden as he seeks reelection. After decades of stable prices — inflation of about 2 percent a year — the sudden increase in Biden's term was a shock, both for consumers and policymakers. Inflation, as measured by the year-over-year percentage change in the consumer price index, spiked to a 9 percent annual rate in June 2022. That was the highest level in 43 years. Biden has tried to explain that inflation was largely the fault of the coronavirus pandemic, not his policies, and that his administration has made strides in reducing it. But in doing so, he has been sloppy in his phrasing. Twice in just the past week, he flatly has said inflation was 9 percent when he became president — when inflation was 1.4 percent when he took office. Our fact check reviewed comments the president has made on inflation in recent weeks. To read the full report and to find out Biden's Pinocchio rating, please click the link.
