No, Biden isn't paying 'rent' for undocumented immigrants Donald Trump is hoping to ride anger over a surge in undocumented immigrants to victory in the presidential race this fall. The number of undocumented immigrants since President Biden took office is certainly large — at least 5 million people — but Trump can't resist pumping up the numbers or making false claims. Now, both Trump and MAGA Inc., a super PAC that backs him, claim that Biden is funding a Michigan program that they say provides rent to undocumented immigrants. A MAGA radio ad claims: "Did you see Biden's paying rent for illegals now? They get handouts and we pay for all of it." In a video posted on social media, Trump said Biden was "selecting and stealing your money to give free housing to illegal alien migrants and then asking you to quarter these foreign armies." At issue is a Michigan program, launched last year, under which individuals who qualify may receive as much as $500 a month in rental subsidies for up to 12 months. The key word is "qualify" — the subsidies in question are not available to people in the country illegally. The federal government, through the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a unit of the Department of Health and Human Services, has long provided (even under Trump) hundreds of millions of dollars a year to states and nongovernment organizations to help refugees transition to life in the United States. Refugees are not in the United States illegally. Indeed, more than half of the people who have been approved for rental subsidies in Michigan are Afghan and Ukrainian refugees — a far cry from the murderers who Trump claims are overrunning the country. Only a small percentage — about 2 percent — even claimed asylum; again, they have legal status. Click the link to read more and find out the Pinocchio rating. Enjoy this newsletter? That time football legend, rig-driving eligible bachelor Biden was arrested There's a regular request that readers send to The Fact Checker: Is that personal anecdote that President Biden just told true? The answer, in many cases, is there's no evidence. Many of these tales are of relatively minor consequence — an apparent effort by the president to make a connection or show that he's not just a politician. But throughout his career, Biden's propensity to exaggerate or embellish tales about his life has led to doubts about his truthfulness. Judging from our mailbag, these stories grate on some people. We produced a roundup of recent stories Biden has told that cannot be verified or are false, including: - He drove an 18-wheeler
- He appeared on a list of 10 most eligible bachelors
- He was the first in family to go to college
- He was state runner-up in scoring in high school football
- He was arrested during a civil rights protest
