Cattle ranching is responsible for the great majority of deforestation in the Amazon, a vital carbon sink that scientists say must be preserved to avert catastrophic warming. A Washington Post analysis found that the world's biggest beef producer, JBS, has yet to fully disentangle itself from ties to illegal deforestation, despite steps taken to protect the environment. The destruction lies at the base of a supply chain that directly connects cattle ranches accused of environmental crimes to factories authorized by the U.S. government to export beef to the United States. |
