Audiences have Carmen to thank for the white-hot charisma of the Magic Mike films and for the powerhouse cast of Ridley Scott's The Martian. In 2013, the Academy recognized Carmen with an Emmy for her stellar work in assembling the players for Steven Soderbergh's daring Behind the Candelabra.
In the last few years, Carmen has expanded her work to include casting for television as long-time filmmakers have made the jump to the small screen; most recent is the Wachowskis' first venture into episodic storytelling with Sense8. She is preparing to jet cross-country in LA to New York to wrap up the second season of Soderberg's excellent Cinemax series The Knick, as well as hold auditions for Amazon's Red Oaks and Montauk for Netflix. |

Congratulations to Professor Michael Calabrese for the Publication of An Introduction to Piers Plowman |
Cal State LA English professor Michael Calabrese has recently published An Introduction to Piers Plowman, the first comprehensive guide to William Langland's masterful work, which outlines the various changes that occurred among all three versions of the poem. The author thoroughly explores the versions in parallel and offers new perspectives and approaches to the evolving nature of the poem. Piers Plowman is a long allegorical poem from the late 14th century, chronicling the dreams and wanderings of a man named "Will"--the hungering human will, searching for truth in a corrupt world and materialist society. Will's guide is "Piers (Peter) the Plowman," a stern but loving man of the soil, who teaches Will the value of both physical and spiritual labor. Professor Calabrese's book offers his current thinking about the classic poem, informed in great part by his efforts to bring the poem to life for his students at Cal State LA. The book includes detailed information about teaching medieval literature at Cal State LA to a multicultural population and was designed as a guide to take first-time readers on a journey through the poem's exploration of the basic human meaning found in a search for virtue, truth, and love in one's community. It is something Calabrese has sought to do in his career as a teacher, and this book represents the heart of his life's work.
