Clinton says her answers to the public about her emails were ‘truthful.’ Nope.

Hillary Clinton received the Fact-checkers’ Trifecta this week, when she said that FBI Director James Comey claimed her answers about classified materials on her emails were “truthful,” and that everything she said publicly “has been consistent and truthful with what I've told them."

Comey has said that Clinton told the FBI the truth (lying to the FBI is a felony). Comey has not taken a stand on her public statements about her emails. And what he has said about classified material on her emails contradicts what Clinton has said publicly.

Clinton has said she never sent or received classified materials (at times specifying “marked classified material”). Comey said there were some emails that were already classified that should not have been sent on an unclassified, private server. That's the uncomfortable truth that Clinton has trouble admitting.

We awarded her Four Pinocchios, which is rare for Clinton. If you recall our Pinocchio count from before the conventions began, Clinton had five Four-Pinocchio ratings and Donald Trump had 33. (As of today, Clinton has six Four-Pinocchio ratings and Trump has 37. Clinton rates higher than Trump on Two and Three Pinocchio claims.) Her claim received "Pants on Fire" from PolitiFact and "false" from FactCheck.org.

But that hasn’t stopped Clinton. Yesterday, she fell back on the claim, even though it was roundly debunked by fact checkers. We issued a Recidivism Watch.

Did Clinton ‘start the talks’ to give $400 million to Iran?

Trump seized on a Wall Street Journal report this week that the Obama administration shipped $400 million in cash to Iran at about the same time that four Americans being held in Iran were released after negotiations. He attacked Clinton, saying she “started talks to give” $400 million in cash to Iran.

But Clinton stepped down as secretary of state in early 2013. The deal involving the American detainees — including The Washington Post's Jason Rezaian — was announced in January 2016, three years later.

Clinton did initiate negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, but substantial talks with Iran did not take place until after she left, and she had nothing to do with the talks on the detainees. We awarded Trump Four Pinocchios.

Even after our fact-check published, Trump repeated this claim that Clinton “actually initiated” the deal. Then he said he saw “top secret” footage of the money transfer, even though no such footage appeared to exist. He kept repeating this unsubstantiated claim it even after his spokeswoman said it was an error.

This morning, in a surprising turn of events — as Trump rarely admits error — Trump walked back his claim about the “top secret” footage.
