The president this week asked his lawyer to scale back his media appearances after a recent series of interviews, White House aides said, but is unlikely to fire the former New York mayor.
The defeat of two starkly contrasting ideas to end the shutdown would demonstrate that what both sides have been pushing for is not possible in the Senate, and that a new path must be forged.
The effort is a sign the Trump administration is bracing for a long funding lapse. Meanwhile, it was unclear whether House and Senate proposals to reopen the government would go anywhere.
