The completion of Brazil's highway BR-319 could vastly increase the Amazon's destruction by opening it up to violent criminal groups waiting to sweep the region and strip the forest bare. The Post's Rio de Janeiro bureau chief Terrence McCoy traveled the road for more than 500 miles from Manaus to Porto Velho with a scientist and a photographer.
